Counselor Maryam Al-Ahmadi, Vice Chairperson – Union Association for Human Rights is one of the most prominent Arab human rights leaders with nearly 20 years of experience. As a legal advisor, she enhances respect for human rights and spreads community rights culture. Her work also supports the participation of civil society in achieving constructive partnerships to develop the human rights movement and the role of civil society in completing the leadership in the rights field and developing institutions and mechanisms concerned with respecting and promoting human rights.
She is one of the pioneers of a civil movement based on partnership and integration to promote respect for human rights in the Arab world. She was the first Emirati woman to win the Braska Award for Community Women in 2010. She received the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work in 2015 and the Sayedaty Award for Creativity and Excellence in the Social Work category in 2016.
Al-Ahmadi represented civil society in international human rights events and forums and delivered numerous oral interventions at the Human Rights Council. She has also participated extensively in more than 15 sessions of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, in many Universal Periodic Reviews, and International Labor Organization meetings. Her ongoing interaction extends to various organizations concerned with human rights, such as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She is also a founding member of many civil society institutions and public benefit associations and has held key responsibilities in several regional and international organizations concerned with human rights.
