Union Association for Human Rights Calls for Adopting the UAE’s Experience in Protecting Digital and Environmental Rights Globally
The Union Association for Human Rights emphasized the need to improve human rights globally through the support and enhancement of human rights bodies and mechanisms for the future. The association urged world countries to adopt the pioneering experience of the United Arab Emirates in developing its human rights legislation so as to protecting digital and environmental rights on a global scale.
This statement was delivered orally by the association in collaboration with United for Human Rights International organization during the General Debate on Item 5 of the high-level 55th session held at the United Nations Human Rights Palace in Geneva, as part of statements by non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) holding consultative status with the United Nations.
Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, President of the Union Association for Human Rights, stated in her address before the Human Rights Council that the recent technological and digital advancements worldwide have posed significant challenges and grave risks to the international human rights framework, deepening violations and diminishing global commitments to these rights. She called for a comprehensive review of the international human rights framework to develop future solutions that ensure the protection and safeguarding of international human rights and freedoms.
Dr. Al Kaabi underscored the importance of the “Summit of the Future,” which will be organized by the United Nations at the end of this year, to respond to all future needs and requirements related to human rights. She praised the efforts of numerous countries that have worked to advance their legislation, thereby supporting the protection of digital and environmental rights and highlighting the value of the UAE’s pioneering model in this domain.
In her UN statement, Al Kaabi, representing civil society, expressed her deep appreciation for the role of the Human Rights Council and all human rights bodies and mechanisms in protecting and promoting human rights. She emphasized the importance of collaboration and commitment from all nations to address the various future challenges and risks and to enhance international partnership in building a better future for human rights in the world.
It is noteworthy that the Union Association for Human Rights, officially inaugurated in January 2024, is participating as a representative of UAE civil society in this session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This participation aligns with mechanisms provided by the UN to boost civil society and NGO engagement, aiming to reinforce the association’s regional and international status and contributions and deepen UAE civil society partnerships and interactions with all international human rights bodies and mechanisms.
