The Union Association for Human Rights’ participation in a civil society organizations session on the ‘Pact for the Future’ at the United Nations

The Union Association for Human Rights participated in an interactive session for non-governmental organizations titled “Outcomes of the Summit of the Future from the Perspective of NGOs”, held at the United Nations.
The session outlined three sequential steps for the implementation of the “Pact for the Future”:
- At the international level: Emphasizing that all doors remain open for the implementation of the pact.
- At the internal level within the United Nations: A steering committee is currently being established, along with task forces across the organization to oversee the implementation of the agreement, with a focus on enhanced cooperation among all UN entities.
- At the level of civil society organizations: The participation of civil society organizations is a priority for the UN, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between civil society and the UN to ensure the integrated implementation of the pact.
Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General, spoke at the session via video call from New York. The session was attended by representatives of several human rights NGOs.
He noted that the “Pact for the Future” is more than just a formal document, describing it as a comprehensive international action plan aimed at revitalizing the multilateral system in the coming years. He stressed the importance of updating the UN’s tools for peace and security in light of current global challenges, and highlighted the pact’s focus on assessing the role of emerging technologies in armed conflict and ensuring the peaceful use of digital innovations.
The session also highlighted the adoption of the founding documents of the pact, represented by the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration for Future Generations. The significance of this achievement was particularly emphasized given the current global tensions. The session focused on evaluating the key takeaways from the Summit of the Future and understanding how the pact will be implemented within the international community in Geneva.
It is worth mentioning that the Union Association for Human Rights contributed to drafting the statement during its participation in the UN Civil Society Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya in May. The association also took part in the Summit of the Future held in New York on September 22–23, which concluded with world leaders adopting the Global Pact—marking the culmination of a comprehensive process led by the United Nations over many years to adapt international cooperation to today’s realities and tomorrow’s challenges.
