Union Association for Human Rights calls for international protection for civilians during armed conflicts

GENEVA, 18th March, 2024 (WAM) — The Union Association for Human Rights, participating in the 55th session of the Human Rights Council’s High-level Segment in Geneva, highlighted the need for international protection of civilians during wars, armed conflicts, and military operations planning.
The Association praised the UAE for its proactive pursuit of peace and its dedication to alleviating civilian suffering, thereby sparing them the devastating consequences of war. It applauded the UAE for its humanitarian and relief efforts, which encompass providing vital resources such as water, food, and medicine, as well as delivering healthcare services to vulnerable populations such as children, women, and the wounded in various countries and conflict zones.
In a statement published on the United Nations website, the Association praised the UAE’s contribution alongside other states and international organisations. These collective efforts significantly contribute to ensuring humanitarian protection for civilians during wartime and armed conflicts.
Furthermore, the Association acknowledged the UAE’s significant role in protecting civilians through its support provided via various institutions and humanitarian initiatives. This dedication has positioned the UAE at the forefront of global efforts to enhance humanitarian support.
The Association expressed deep appreciation for the UAE’s initiatives and major projects that have strengthened humanitarian support efforts in conflict areas worldwide. Rooted in its cultural heritage and commitment to international cooperation, the UAE’s efforts aim to strengthen international partnerships in humanitarian endeavours to ensure protection for civilians affected by destructive wars and armed conflicts.
These came in a statement issued by the Union Association for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Arab- European Human Rights Dialogue. The statement was delivered under item four of the agenda of the sessions of the Human Rights Council, and in the framework of non-governmental organisations with consultative status at the United Nations.
The Association recommended that the Human Rights Council conduct effective and transparent investigations into violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. It stressed the importance of coordinating with relevant agencies to enhance humanitarian awareness and train military forces worldwide to adhere to the laws and regulations of war, thus ensuring the protection of civilians.
The Association called upon all United Nations bodies and agencies to prioritise addressing the suffering endured by women and children, activating procedures and mechanisms aimed at achieving international protection for civilians during wars, armed conflicts, and military operations planning.
The Union Association for Human Rights, established in the UAE in January 2024, is participating in 55th session of the Human Rights Council’s High-level Segment in Geneva, under the leadership of Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, President of the Association, and Maryam Al Ahmadi, Vice President, alongside a team of international experts dedicated to human rights.
